Shaken, not stirred, is the personal preference of James Bond for his vodka martini. But those aren't the only methods.

HOW IT WORKS

Ingredients are mixed via friction.

Ingredients are combined slowly.

Ingredients are poured together.

02

The friction of shaking liquid against ice causes it to melt, causing dilution of the alcohol, reducing the drink's strength.

SHAKEN COCKTAILS

03

Gentler than shaking. The ingredients are slowly stirred with a long bar spoon.  Slower movement yields less dilution.

Built-in-the-glass drinks are quick, efficient cocktails with just two or three ingredients.

DRINKS & THEIR METHODS

STIRRED: martini, negroni, old-fashioned, boulevardier

COMBO: Moscow mule, mojito

SHAKEN: margarita, daiquiri, sidecar, shots

06

There are other drink techniques that can be used in addition to the three methods.

OTHER METHODS

05

A base may be shaken or stirred, strained into a glass and then topped with a built layer of bubbles, like club soda.

COMBINATION DRINKS

07

Muddled drinks include fresh ingredients like herbs or fruits, that are smashed and then shaken with other ingredients.

MUDDLED DRINKS

08

A float is a layer created by slowly pouring liquor over the back of a bar spoon. Lighter alcohols will float to the top.
