Simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made from sugar and water. It gets its name from the easy-to-make quality of this two-ingredient recipe.

There are two main ingredients in simple syrup: sugar and water. It is often flavored with herbs, fruits, spices and more.

Combine sugar and water over low heat. No boiling is needed, but it should be warm enough for the sugar to dissolve. Cool before using in drinks.

Add the sugar and water to a jar, then shake it up until dissolved. Or add everything to a blender and mix it up until the sugar is incorporated.

The most common syrup ratio is 1-to-1 sugar to water, meaning you'd use equal amounts of both. (e.g. 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water)

go beyond white sugar:
Store it in food-safe, airtight containers. Mason jars work especially well, but you can also use upcycled glass bottles or plastic containers.
You can use honey, maple syrup or agave nectar in place of simple syrup. Sugar-free simple syrup can be made with stevia or coconut sugar.
