Somewhere right now, a parent is buying school supplies while their kid still has weeks of summer vacation left. It’s not because they’re ahead of schedule but because everyone else already started, too. Back-to-school shopping has stopped waiting for August, and this year that’s impossible to ignore.

Shopping used to follow a simple pattern: browse in early August, buy in the last two weeks, panic-shop the weekend before school starts. That pattern is gone. It’s turned into something closer to a summer-long project that kicks off not long after school lets out in June.
The numbers back it up. About 66% of shoppers say they finish most of their back-to-school buying between late July and the final weeks before class starts. That window, the one families are in right now, has basically become the whole season.
Sales and crowds are pushing people to move faster
Retailers built a deadline into the calendar, and shoppers are following it. Promotions shape when 9 in 10 back-to-school shoppers buy, and nearly half plan their purchases around specific sale events instead of waiting for one big trip.

There’s a simpler reason, too. Nobody wants to fight for the last box of crayons on a Sunday night in late August. Getting ahead of empty shelves and long lines has become its own kind of reward, sale or no sale.
It’s not just pencils and notebooks anymore
Back-to-school spending has spread way past the classic supply list. Three out of 4 families now spend at least $100 on clothing and shoes alone, more than double what they spend on actual school supplies.
Add in a new laptop, cleats for fall sports, or dorm gear for a first-year college student, and it’s easy to see why one quick shopping trip turned into weeks of spread-out errands.
So, if your back-to-school list still isn’t done, you’re in good company. But if you haven’t started yet, this is your sign that the early birds already have a head start, and there’s no reason you can’t grab a slice of the deals they’re already cashing in on.
