Many travelers do not take full advantage of the hotel concierge. That leaves a lot of useful help on the table. Concierge teams can sometimes arrange hard-to-get reservations, solve travel logistics, and plan special touches before you even arrive. The key is knowing what to ask for and asking before a small request turns into a last-minute problem.

An Introduction to the Maître d’
Instead of stopping at “Can you get us a table?” ask what the concierge likes to order there, or whether they can make an introduction to the maître d’. Anthony Fabiano, hotel manager of the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, recommends both. A concierge with strong local restaurant relationships may be able to add useful context to a reservation and help make the meal feel more personal.

A Late Checkout With a Reason
Late checkout often depends on how full the hotel is and how much time housekeeping has to turn rooms. Kristen Kellogg, co-founder of Salt & Wind Travel, calls that calculation “housekeeping math.” A partially full hotel may have more flexibility than a sold-out property. Ask early and give a specific reason such as a late flight or a child’s nap. The hotel still may say no, but a clear request gives staff more to work with.
Help With Sold-Out Tickets
A “sold out” sign does not always mean the conversation is over. Nicole Janoff Wallach, vice president of leisure travel at Magma Global, says concierge teams can sometimes use long-standing local relationships to arrange last-minute access to sold-out concerts and events. There is no guarantee, and some hotels will have stronger connections than others. Still, it is worth asking before giving up.

Luggage Storage Before Check-In
If your room is not ready yet, ask whether the hotel can hold your bags. Some properties explicitly offer complimentary luggage storage before check-in and after checkout. Policies vary by hotel, so confirm with your property rather than assuming. If the answer is yes, you can start exploring instead of carrying a suitcase around for hours.
Help With Everyday Errands
A concierge can sometimes take care of practical jobs you would not think to ask about. Travel Bulletin says concierge teams may help with everyday errands, including arranging dry cleaning, mailing a package, organizing flower delivery, or even coordinating a pharmacy pickup. Services vary by hotel, but if an everyday errand is eating into your trip, it is worth asking whether the concierge can help.
Transportation Help When Prices Jump
Ride-share prices can rise during periods of high demand. If the app price looks painful, ask the concierge what other transportation options the hotel can arrange. Concierge teams commonly help with transportation, including calling cars or helping guests get to the airport. A hotel-arranged car will not always be cheaper, but asking gives you another option before you accept a surge-priced ride.
An Itinerary Before You Arrive
You do not have to wait until check-in to use the concierge. Fabiano says many luxury hotel concierge teams contact guests before arrival, while Wallach describes working with hotel teams in advance to secure guides, restaurants, and experiences. If your hotel offers the service, email the concierge before your trip. Getting requests early can make planning easier, especially for restaurants and activities with limited availability.

Where They Actually Like to Go
Instead of asking for “the best restaurant,” make the question personal. Ask where the concierge likes to eat, relax, or spend time off. Hilton Grand Vacations recommends asking concierge or front-desk staff about the places they personally enjoy. A specific question can lead to a more useful answer than a generic list of tourist favorites.
A Surprise You Have Not Planned
Concierge help can go well beyond reservations. Wallach described a team that coordinated a surprise proposal with flowers, photography, and personal touches. You can also ask about help with a birthday, anniversary, or other celebration. Give the hotel as much notice as you can. Not every request will be possible, but advance notice gives the team a better chance to see what they can arrange.
Ask Before You Need the Help
The concierge desk is most useful before you are in a bind. Ask about the dinner reservation you need, the extra hours you want, or the celebration you would like help planning. The answer will not always be yes, but you may have more options than you expected.
