Everyone assumes the Pumpkin Spice Latte launches earlier every single year. Starbucks’ own release dates say otherwise; some Augusts came early, while others slipped back toward September. Here are the seven turning points that show the real pattern, including when it broke and why one early announcement can make the whole season feel longer.

The 100-Store Test That Started It
Starbucks tested the Pumpkin Spice Latte in 100 stores in Vancouver, British Columbia and Washington, D.C., in 2003. The company quickly realized it had a winner and rolled it out across the United States and Canada the following fall. There was no annual return date yet to compare with previous years.
September Was Still the Norm
By 2016, Starbucks was bringing the PSL back on Sept. 6. In 2017, the official nationwide return moved up by just one day to Sept. 5. That small change matters because it shows how normal early September still looked before the bigger jump that followed.
2018 Sent PSL Into August
The real calendar break came in 2018. Starbucks officially brought the PSL back on Aug. 28, making it the first time the company had launched the drink before Labor Day. That move pushed PSL season out of September and into late August in a way customers could hardly miss.

The Earlier-Each-Year Run Took Hold
The next three years gave the popular “earlier every year” idea real support. Starbucks returned the PSL on Aug. 27 in 2019, Aug. 25 in 2020 and Aug. 24 in 2021. Each launch arrived earlier than the one before it, creating a clean three-year run toward the front of August.
2022 Broke the Streak
Then Starbucks moved the date the other way. The 2022 fall menu arrived Aug. 30, six days later than the 2021 launch. Axios reported that it was the latest PSL return since 2018. One later date was enough to break the idea that Starbucks was automatically moving the drink earlier every year.
2024 Set the Record
The date moved earlier again after that. Starbucks brought the PSL back on Aug. 24 in 2023, then launched its 2024 fall menu on Aug. 22. That 2024 date was the earliest official PSL return in company history. It looked like another step toward an ever-longer pumpkin spice season, but the record did not become the new baseline.

The Record Didn’t Become the New Normal
Starbucks set the 2025 return for Aug. 26, four days later than the 2024 record. What happened unusually early was the buildup. AccuWeather reported that Starbucks gave the date about a month earlier than usual because Google searches for “pumpkin spice” had started rising in mid-June rather than mid-July the year before. In 2026, the PSL returned Aug. 25, still three days later than the 2024 record.
The Calendar Is the Story
PSL history is a useful reminder that a trend can look inevitable when you focus only on the years that fit it. Starbucks clearly moved the drink earlier for several seasons, yet the later dates show that one record does not guarantee another. The better question now is not whether next year’s latte beats the previous launch by a day or two. It is whether an earlier date lasts long enough to become a real pattern.
