Chef Jenn's Take on Sweet Potato Casserole

Roasting the sweet potatoes instead of boiling them is the easiest way to make this classic holiday casserole even better. The potatoes become sweeter and less watery, giving the filling a richer flavor and creamier texture. Instead of a flour-based streusel, this version finishes with a buttery pecan topping that bakes into a crunchy, praline-like crust that's the perfect contrast to the silky sweet potatoes.

Chef Jenn's Tips:

  • Roast the sweet potatoes and mash them a day ahead and refrigerate them until you're ready to assemble the casserole.
  • Sweet potatoes can also be cooked in the air fryer at 350°F for 35 to 45 minutes, depending on their size.
  • Leave a few small lumps in the mashed sweet potatoes if you prefer a more rustic texture.
  • Toasted pecans add even more flavor. Toast them for 5 to 7 minutes before making the topping if you have the time.
  • Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before serving so the filling has time to set.
