Luxury travelers have long known the secrets to make the most of their vacations, and with a bit of know-how, any traveler can enjoy the same exclusive access and unforgettable experiences as the A-list crowd. Here are the 2025 luxury travel trends to watch — and they’re not just for the rich and famous.
The ultimate luxury is an uncrowded monument
Luxury travelers don’t want to skip the top sights, but overcrowding remains an issue at in-demand locations. A new trend in luxury travel is out-of-hours experiences, where travelers can see world-famous sights alone or in a small group before or after their public opening hours.
Travelers are asking for experiences that let them avoid the crowds, and savvy governments are answering the call. These types of tours already exist at many of Europe’s top sites, including the Vatican Museums, the British Museum, the Tower of London, the Duomo in Florence, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and even the Acropolis in Greece.
Lost sleep is a small price to pay for the luxury of an unhurried experience. The best part is that anyone can book these after-hours tours.
Airport VIP services are on the rise
Not everyone can charter a jet, but some travelers are opting out of the typical airport experience altogether and opting for luxury travel choices. New options let savvy travelers have the practicalities of commercial flying without all the stress.
In airports worldwide, including Los Angeles, Atlanta, London, Dubai and Tel Aviv, travelers can pay to never set foot in a terminal. These private terminal experiences allow guests to arrive at a separate airport entrance, where they are whisked away to a private suite. An attendant manages check-in, immigration and checking bags while visitors relax with gourmet food and drink. When it’s time to board, the attendant guides travelers through private security and into a waiting vehicle, which takes them directly to the plane.
Far-flung destinations are rising in popularity
Italy still tops the list of most sought-after destinations, but lesser-known places are increasingly popular. With expanding flight routes, like United’s new nonstops from Newark to Marrakesh, Morocco and Houston to Medellin, Colombia, these difficult-to-reach locales are becoming easier and more approachable for travelers. With traveling time being one of the top considerations for travelers, these destinations will see an influx of visitors.
Paid is the only way to premium seats
CNBC reported Delta’s November 2024 investor day, revealing that 70% of premium bookings are now paid travel rather than upgrades. This is a huge shift from the 12% that it was 15 years ago, and travelers who want a premium experience will need to budget for this. There are still plenty of smart ways to play the points-and-miles game, and new tools like Point.me make it easier than ever to maximize the value of those virtual currencies.
Travelers are going ‘free agency’
A November 2024 New York Times article says a trend from recent years is increasing in 2025: Cutting ties with a single airline to achieve elite frequent flyer status. One of the biggest perks of airline status used to be the free cabin upgrades flyers were possibly, even likely on some routes, to get.
In recent years, two trends have been seen, causing frequent flyers to opt out of the rewards game. First is the systemic devaluation of miles. It no longer pays to rack up tons of miles on an airline and plan to spend them in a few years on a big trip. They may be worth far less than they were when you started accumulating.
Second is the rise of airline-cobranded credit cards, which have swamped frequent flyer programs with members who may rarely even fly the airline. Those coveted upgrades have become a thing of the past, and credit card holders have made airline lounges more crowded than ever.
Luxury travelers now prioritize the convenience of a route and the quality of the hard product rather than which airline they are flying. Hard product is aviation-speak for the seats, in-flight entertainment, bathrooms and other physical attributes of the plane they are flying.
Cooler destinations are hot
As weather events become less predictable and heat waves more intense, more travelers are looking north for their adventures. The 2025 Virtuoso report highlighted Antarctica, Iceland and Norway as three of the top five destinations on the rise. Nearly half of Virtuoso’s advisors said climate change and its effects are factoring into their clients’ plans. With heat waves and wildfires hitting Europe last summer, it’s easy to see why.
Worldschooling tops family vacations
Luxury family travel is expanding. With it, families share a desire to make travel an immersive, educational experience. Families in 2025 will plan trips around what kids are learning in school. Or they may turn their vacation into a hands-on learning experience. The latter is increasingly popular among families who call themselves worldschoolers.
Worldschooling is easier than ever, with travel operators offering family packages that combine learning and doing. Families visiting Paris can see Impressionist masterpieces at the Musée d’Orsay, followed by a private painting workshop where each family member creates their own art. These experiences bridge the gap between learning and fun, resulting in a unique souvenir kids will have forever.
Longevity is the new wellness travel
Luxury travelers have always been interested in wellness, but the focus is shifting to longevity. The Virtuoso luxury travel trend watch report highlighted Silver Bullet Wellness as an emerging trend, with 1 in 8 clients already traveling specifically for wellness. Wellness tourism overall is predicted to grow 16.6% annually, according to the Global Wellness Institute.
Jenny Morris, owner of Casa Amoros in Spain, already sees this trend. “We’re seeing a shift toward travelers who are not just seeking wellness programs for the duration of their stay, but are deeply curious about technology-backed treatments that can reverse aging and promote lasting effects for a higher quality of life.”
