Disney and Universal keep quietly rewriting the rulebook, and the version you remember from your last trip probably doesn’t apply anymore. Genie+ has a new name, Disneyland’s scanning your face at the gate, and one classic hotel perk just got swapped for something smaller. Before you drop a dime on tickets or a room, here are seven changes worth knowing first.
Genie+ Became Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Walt Disney World retired the Genie+ name and now calls the service Lightning Lane Multi Pass. The bigger change is when you plan. You can choose up to three eligible rides or shows before your park day. You also choose arrival windows. Guests at Disney Resort hotels and other select hotels can buy up to seven days before their stay. All other guests can purchase up to three days before their park visit.
Premier Pass Adds a Pricier Shortcut
Disney also sells Lightning Lane Premier Pass at Walt Disney World. It covers one-time entry to each available Lightning Lane experience in one park for one day. You do not book arrival windows. Valid park admission is still required. Disney sells the pass in limited quantities and prices vary by date and park. Treat it as an extra cost, not as your theme-park ticket.
Disney World Dropped a Reservation Rule Disneyland Kept
Walt Disney World stopped requiring park reservations for standard date-based tickets starting Jan. 9, 2024. Disneyland still works differently. California guests need valid admission plus a park reservation for the same park and date. Reservations are limited and depend on availability. A ticket alone does not lock in your Disneyland park day.
Disneyland Added Facial Recognition Lanes
Disneyland now offers facial recognition lanes at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure. A camera takes an image at entry. The system compares it with the image tied to your ticket or pass. Taking part is optional. Disney says lanes without facial recognition are also available. You can use those lanes if you do not want the face-matching option.
Disneyland Hotel Early Entry Is Gone
Disneyland Resort hotel guests no longer get the old 30-minute Early Entry perk. It ended in January 2026. Checked-in hotel guests now get one complimentary Lightning Lane entry to an eligible Multi Pass attraction during the resort stay. That is one entry during the stay, not 30 extra park minutes each day. Keep that change in mind before paying more to stay on-site.
Epic Universe Tickets Got a Passholder Discount
Universal Orlando Annual and Seasonal passes still do not include regular Epic Universe admission. But in April 2026, Universal added a 15% passholder discount on single-day Epic Universe tickets. The discount applies to a separate, dated ticket rather than turning Epic into an included park. Prices and availability vary by date. If you are comparing pass costs, budget for a separate Epic ticket even after the discount.
Longer Universal Tickets Now Include Epic Universe Park Hopping
Universal changed its multi-day ticket setup for 2026. Its new 2026 ticket products include Epic Universe on eligible three-, four- and five-day Park-to-Park tickets. Those tickets also cover Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Guests can move between the included parks during valid ticket days. For trips built around several Universal parks, that gives you more freedom to divide each valid day.
Check the Rules Before You Price the Trip
Theme-park planning now starts with the rules behind each product, since a lower price can lose its value if the booking lacks access you expected, whether that’s a missing park date or a changed hotel perk. Read the current terms first, then compare what each ticket or room actually gives you. That small check can keep a familiar vacation from turning into an expensive surprise.
