A Beloved Charleston Hotel Has a New Name and a Shakespeare-Inspired Rooftop to Match

Charleston takes its hotels seriously, but one on the cobblestone streets just raised the bar entirely. It renamed itself after the Latin word for creative work, put Shakespeare on the rooftop and etched a theatrical quote into mirrors throughout the property.

Hotel Operis opened October 1 in Charleston’s Historic District, within walking distance of 11 theaters, and remains part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. The 50 rooms are the same. What’s new is everything guests actually experience when they walk through the door.

The Rooftop Got a Whole New Act

One of the most visible changes is Arden Room Rooftop Bar & Dining on the fourth floor. Inspired by the Forest of Arden in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the space has a garden-influenced design, new lounge seating and views across Charleston’s historic skyline.

The cocktail menu leans into the theme, with Whispering Willow, Salt & Sage Palomita, Arden’s Garden Martini and the Secret Garden Sour among the options. Dinner runs Lowcountry, with crispy oyster sliders, crab bucatini and grouper schnitzel on the menu. Café Lumen handles breakfast and lunch on the main floor. Brunch service and additional rooftop furnishings are coming in the weeks ahead.

Art Is Part of Checking In

The lobby and gallery now function as a connected art space, with installations spanning opera, theater, dance, music and visual media. The work draws from Charleston’s arts community and runs from dramatic to surreal. Throughout the property, mirrors etched with a theatrical quote serve as the hotel’s signature Mirror Cues, with an expansive collection spread across the Atrium.

Stumbling across one mid-hallway or looking up to find one overhead is the kind of thing that turns a two-night stay into a story worth telling. Guests pause, read, reflect and become part of the scene rather than just passing through it.

Pour Yourself Into It

The Wine Bar lets guests craft a custom wine blend rather than simply ordering off a list. Cocktail classes go deeper, covering both mixology technique and the history of Charleston’s cocktail culture. More programming and partnerships with local artisans are on the way. Hotel Operis sits in the Historic District, with King Street shops, art galleries, horse-drawn carriage tours and acclaimed restaurants all within walking distance. If Charleston is already on your list, this is a good reason to book sooner.
