Plenty of people plan a national park trip around one specific thing: the chains on Angels Landing, the cables up Half Dome, the tour through Carlsbad’s caves. Then they show up with their park pass in hand and find out that pass doesn’t cover any of it. Nine parks now run a second reservation system on top of regular entry, and it’s easy to miss until you’re standing at the trailhead without one.
Rocky Mountain’s Timed Entry
Rocky Mountain National Park uses two timed-entry reservation options during its 2026 peak season. Regular Timed Entry is required from May 22 through October 12 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and excludes Bear Lake Road. Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road runs from May 22 through October 18 and is required for that corridor from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to Recreation.gov.
The Angels Landing Permit
You do not need a reservation to enter Zion National Park, but you do need a permit to hike past Scout Lookout onto the chain section of Angels Landing. Zion issues permits through seasonal lotteries and a day-before lottery. The day-before lottery runs from 12:01 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mountain Time, with results issued at 4 p.m.
Haleakalā’s Sunrise Reservation
Driving into Haleakalā National Park’s Summit District for sunrise takes advance planning. A $1 vehicle reservation is required for entry from 3 to 7 a.m., and the park entrance fee or pass is separate. The reservation gives you access to the Summit District during that window, but it does not guarantee space at a particular sunrise viewing area.
Cadillac Summit Road
Acadia National Park requires a vehicle reservation to drive Cadillac Summit Road from May 20 through October 25, 2026. Reservations are offered for sunrise and daytime entry. You do not need the Cadillac reservation if you enter the area on foot, by bicycle, or by taxi, but Acadia’s regular park entrance pass still applies.
The Half Dome Lottery
Yosemite does not require a reservation to enter the park in 2026, but Half Dome is different. Day hikers need a Half Dome permit when the cables are up. Yosemite distributes permits through a preseason lottery in March and a daily lottery that opens two days before each hiking date, with applications accepted from midnight to 4 p.m. Pacific time. The cables are normally up from late May into October, although the dates can change with conditions.
Old Rag Day-Use Tickets
At Shenandoah National Park, hikers heading into the Old Rag ticket area need a day-use ticket from March 1 through November 30, plus a park entrance pass. The park makes 800 tickets available per day. Half are released 30 days ahead, and the other half five days ahead, so this is one hike where planning before arrival matters.
Mesa Verde’s Cliff Dwelling Tours
Mesa Verde’s famous cliff dwellings are not all open for self-guided entry. Except for Step House, entering a cliff dwelling requires a reservation on a ranger-led tour. Reservations open 14 days in advance, and canceled tickets can return to Recreation.gov up to two hours before a tour. The 2026 tour season runs from May into October.
Carlsbad Cavern Timed Entry
Carlsbad Caverns National Park requires a timed-entry reservation to access Carlsbad Cavern. The reservation costs $1, and visitors also need an entrance pass at the visitor center. The timed reservation sets your arrival window, while the entrance pass covers cavern access by elevator or by hiking in.
White Rim Road Permits
Canyonlands National Park does not require timed entry for the park as a whole, but White Rim Road has its own permit rule. Every vehicle, motorcycle, and bicycle on the road needs a day-use permit for a single-day trip. Online permits become available at 8 a.m. Mountain Time the day before, and a limited number of vehicle permits are also issued in person.
Check Before You Leave Home
The extra reservation or permit is often tied to the exact experience you built the trip around, not the park entrance itself. Rules, booking windows, and seasonal dates can differ from one park to another, so check the current NPS page before you drive to the trailhead, summit road, or visitor center.
