9 Family Halloween Costumes Already Hiding at Home

Open the linen closet before you open a shopping app. A sheet, apron or pair of pajamas can do more Halloween work than it gets credit for, especially when the whole family commits to one idea. These nine costumes start with ordinary household items, so you can build a coordinated group from what you already have instead of treating Halloween like another shopping deadline.

Ghost

A white sheet still makes an instantly readable ghost. Cut openings large enough for clear sight, then shorten the sheet so feet stay free. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says costumes should fit well. Costumes should not be overly long or baggy because of trip and fire risks. Keep the sheet away from candles or other open flames.

Mummy

Give an old white sheet one last Halloween job. Tear it into strips, then wrap the strips over a white shirt, sweatshirt and pants. A DIY mummy tutorial from NellieBellie uses the same sheet-strip method and suggests coffee water if you want an aged color. Keep the strips secure rather than leaving long ends that can drag.

Princess Leia

You do not need to copy Leia’s movie costume stitch for stitch. Start with a white robe, oversized white shirt or clean white sheet you already own. Add a belt and style hair into two side buns. StarWars.com describes Leia’s hooded white dress and hair buns as one of the character’s most recognizable looks, so those details do most of the work.

Towel Capes

Turn towels or small blankets into a whole superhero team. Drape one over each person’s shoulders and secure it with a belt or another safe fastener you already have. DesignDash recommends a towel or blanket for a quick superhero cape. Keep each cape short enough that nobody steps on it while walking.

Kitchen Chefs

Raid the utensil drawer, not the costume aisle. An apron, mixing spoon, pair of tongs, potholders and mixing bowl can turn one person into a chef. Then everyone else can grab a different kitchen prop. The Order Expert lists those same household pieces for a chef costume. Add handwritten chef names to scrap paper if the family wants matching badges.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

Three people already make the core team. For rock, wear gray clothes and tuck a pillow under an oversized sweatshirt. For paper and scissors, cut big shapes from a clean shipping box or cereal box and label them with markers you already have. Care.com uses a stuffed sweatshirt for rock and large board pieces for paper and scissors.

Pajama Party

Pajama Party starts with clothes already meant for staying comfortable. Everyone wears pajamas, then carries a pillow, blanket or empty popcorn container. The Order Expert suggests that exact mix for a pajama-party costume. Matching sets are optional, so the family can lean into whatever is already clean.

Table Setting

Turn dinner-table odds and ends into a four-person gag. One person can wear or carry a cloth placemat. Another gets a cloth napkin and two more can use lightweight utensil props made from clean cardboard. The Order Expert’s table-setting costume starts with a fabric placemat, fabric napkin, fork and spoon. For kids, use lightweight cardboard utensil shapes instead of real metal flatware.

Cleaning Crew

Housework finally gets a costume payoff. Hand out a bucket, mop, rubber gloves, sponge, brush or rag and let each family member claim a different job. The Order Expert lists those same supplies for a cleaning-person costume. Keep bottles of actual cleaners at home and use only empty or harmless props.

Matching Is Not the Point

Working from what is already available turns the household itself into the costume kit. The useful part is not perfect matching; it is giving everyone a role in one shared idea. Keep comfort, visibility, and safe fit ahead of the joke, then stop when the group reads clearly. Halloween does not need a receipt to look coordinated.
