Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Mexico just introduced three new wedding cake concepts, and the resort says each one turns your cake into something more than dessert. Two of them start with a conversation about your relationship, while the third puts a towering cake on display that’s mostly not cake at all.

Nahúm Velasco, head chef of the resort’s restaurant with a Michelin star, leads the creative side of the new cakes. For two of the concepts, the cake starts with your story as a couple. He turns what you share into each cake’s toppings and look.

3 Cake Concepts at a Five Diamond Resort

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Mexico, Grand Velas Riviera Maya now offers three cake concepts to choose from. The resort holds a AAA Five Diamond rating and sits on 206 acres of jungle and mangroves on the Yucatan Peninsula. Some of its 539 suites sit in a tropical setting.

A Blank Heart Cake You Make Your Own

The Sweetest Canvas draws on vintage heart cakes, which the resort said are a social media obsession. A white heart cake arrives at your reception, ready for you and your partner to make your own.

Before the wedding, you meet with Velasco online to talk through the memories, places, colors, scents and flavors that shaped your relationship. He translates them into a custom selection of toppings, textures, decorations and details. The resort said the concept turns your wedding cake into “an edible piece of couture.”

3 Cakes for 3 Wedding Weekend Events

Chapters of Love splits your story across three artisan cakes, and each one debuts at a different event during your wedding weekend.

In consultations before the wedding, you share how you met and the milestones you’ve celebrated since. Velasco gives every cake its own flavors and look. The resort said guests get to experience your story through the cakes rather than a speech or a slideshow.

A Towering Cake That’s Mostly for Show

For The Editorial Cut, the resort’s design team builds a tall tower of decorated faux tiers to put the spectacle first. A small real cake just for the two of you sits on top.

When it’s time to cut the cake, you slice into that top tier for the cameras. After the photos, you and your partner share your first bite in private.

Planning a Cake at Grand Velas

Pricing depends on your date and seasonal availability, so ask about the cakes early. If you’re leaning toward Chapters of Love, map out your weekend events first, since each cake needs its own moment. For The Sweetest Canvas, start jotting down the memories and flavors you’d want Velasco to work with.
