Sure, you can still enjoy a meal out at your favorite restaurant, but when you truly want a special dining experience, look for one that offers a chef’s table or tasting menu.

Chef’s tables go beyond a usual dining room seat. Typically, you sit in or near the kitchen and often have a view of the chefs at work. It’s a behind-the-scenes seat that brings you closer to the action.

Murano, London
At Murano, Angela Hartnett’s one-Michelin-starred restaurant, the tasting menu is a delicious journey through modern Italian cuisine. Forget spaghetti and meatballs; the menu is designed to showcase the best seasonal ingredients, and it often evolves based on what’s freshest that day. Diners can expect house-made pastas, delicate seafood and perfectly balanced sauces, all crafted with Hartnett’s signature touch: simple, honest food that’s deeply satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu at this cozy and intimate eatery, but like all London restaurants, you need to book well in advance.
At Murano, the chef’s table offers private seating with a window view of the kitchen’s action. This is not my ideal chef’s table experience; you can get much better in London. My recommendation: enjoy the tasting menu at Murano, it truly is spectacular. Save your chef’s table experience for another restaurant.
Dinner by Heston, London
Dinner by Heston isn’t just dinner; it’s a deep dive into the history of British food, reinvented through the lens of science and culinary storytelling. The tasting menu reads like a journey through time, with each dish carefully researched and explained. For diners, the experience is part theatre, part lesson and fully immersive.
I was especially appreciative of the ability to choose how much information I wanted on each dish. If you’re on a romantic date there, you may want to skip the history of each dish. For foodies, I suggest hearing about them and the techniques used in each meal.
Dinner by Heston, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, is a must-try, but their chef’s table was unimpressive. It was set back from the kitchen, and while the seating was intimate and the view of the kitchen good, I’ve seen much better chef’s tables.
Aulis, London
Aulis is as intimate as it gets. With just a handful of seats, Simon Rogan’s London chef’s table strips away the barriers between kitchen and guest. Diners are not just watching; they’re part of the conversation, tasting elements as they’re prepared and learning about the micro-seasonal ingredients that shape each dish.
The front door to this cozy space that holds a small reception area and the 12-seat chef’s table is unmarked and off a small alley in London. Their chef’s table is the pinnacle of chef’s table dining experiences. You sit at the curved table directly across from the chefs, who are preparing the food just a few feet away from you.
The chefs talk to you as they prepare the food, and questions are invited. The accompanying tasting menu changes frequently, often driven by what’s at its peak that day. It’s an experimental, hands-on experience where curiosity is welcome and each dish feels like a creative reveal. It is easily one of my all-time favorite dining experiences.
Pro tip: Aulis books months in advance. Get on their email list and watch for a new bank of reservations to open.
Oria, Barcelona
At Oria, Martín Berasategui’s Michelin-starred restaurant, the tasting menu is the heart of the experience. It’s an elegant, multi-course journey that blends Basque inspiration with Mediterranean flair, offering dishes that are visually stunning and flawlessly balanced. The menu highlights delicate seafood, carefully layered sauces and textures that come together in plates that are as stunning to look at as they are delicious to eat. Each course feels intentional but never fussy.
Caelis, Barcelona
At Caelis, Chef Romain Fornell’s Michelin-starred restaurant, a bold and imaginative tasting menu balances French technique with Catalan soul. Each dish is a creative statement: playful, modern and full of surprises. Fornell isn’t afraid to push boundaries, but he always stays anchored in the quality of his ingredients. Expect Catalan seafood, local meats and standout seasonal produce, each course presented with flair but grounded by thoughtful flavor combinations.
While there is no dedicated chef’s table at Caelis, a horseshoe-shaped bar seating around the kitchen offers a front-seat view of all the culinary action.
Mercer Hotel, Barcelona
Tucked inside a historic building with ancient Roman walls, Mercer Restaurant is where Catalan cuisine takes center stage in the hands of a chef deeply committed to local tradition. The tasting menu is an edible map of Catalonia. In the skilled hands of Chef Xavier Lahuerta, dishes are created with seafood from the nearby coast, produce from local markets and artisanal cheeses from the region’s mountain villages.
At Mercer, the chef doesn’t just cook; he tells the story of Barcelona’s culinary soul, guiding diners through each course with personal insights and a clear passion for his heritage. This is more than a meal. Dining at Mercer is a cultural journey served plate by plate.
Sixthirtynine, Woodstock, Ontario
Sixthirtynine proves that you don’t need to be in a big city to experience a world-class chef’s table. In Woodstock, Ontario, this small, family-run restaurant has built a loyal following with its hyperlocal, farm-driven tasting menus. The chef crafts each course around what’s fresh and in season, sometimes even harvesting the ingredients that same day. The chef’s table here feels especially personal: a small six-person table built right into the kitchen, offering you a front-row view of all the action.
Accompanied by genuine conversation, an unhurried pace and dishes that showcase the quiet beauty of Ontario’s agricultural landscape, Sixthirtynine is the kind of place where diners walk away feeling like they’ve just enjoyed a meal in a friend’s home. Only here, the meals come with restaurant-level precision and care.
Chef’s table onboard Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises takes the chef’s table concept to the high seas. I recently enjoyed a chef’s table dinner on the Celebrity Beyond, and dinner was exceptional. Starting in an intimate, private dining room, every dish was created by Global Culinary Ambassador Daniel Boulud. While he wasn’t on the ship, his exceptionally trained staff executed each dish with precision, and the head chef presented each mouth-watering course.
Housed in the cruise’s specialty restaurant Le Voyage, guests settle into an intimate dining setting where chefs and sommeliers unveil each course and wine pairing tableside. From the opening toast to the final flourish, Celebrity’s chef’s table offers a full evening perfect for food lovers seeking something exceptional on their voyage.
Pro tip: Reserve your chef’s table experience when you book your cruise. They only offer it once during a given itinerary, and it’ll book up quickly.
