Your Next Cruise Might Come With a Real Rock Concert Built In

For years, cruise ship entertainment meant a lounge singer, a magician and maybe a comedian on formal night. This year, several major lines are staging full production rock shows and Broadway-caliber tribute performances that wouldn’t look out of place on land.

Cruise lines spent years competing mostly on itinerary: which ship went where, and how many pools it had along the way. Now the fight is over what happens on the ship itself. Lines are redirecting entertainment budgets toward name-brand partnerships instead of generic in-house variety acts. The latest entrant is Rolling Stone, which just signed on with Holland America Line for an original rock production.

The timing makes sense. Global cruise passenger volume hit a record 37.2 million in 2025, according to the 2026 State of the Cruise Industry Report from the Cruise Lines International Association, and the industry is funneling that record demand into bigger stage productions instead of just bigger ships and longer drink lists.

What’s actually playing on board

Holland America didn’t just build a rock show, it put Rolling Stone’s name on the marquee, the same way Norwegian is leaning on Elton John’s catalog and Virgin Voyages is drawing on five decades of its own record label’s music.

If you’re picking a ship for an upcoming trip, it’s worth checking what’s actually playing on board before you book, the same way you’d check a hotel’s amenities.
