Portugal’s Algarve just won the title of Europe’s Leading Beach Destination again, so you’d expect all the attention to go to its beaches. The region’s tourism bureau, though, sends a different message: it points travelers past the sand to what the Algarve offers away from the water, and well beyond summer.

The Algarve picked up the award on Oct. 17 at the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony in Montenegro. Its Atlantic coast mixes golden-sand beaches with limestone cliffs, secluded coves and coastal towns along Portugal’s southern edge. Travelers come for relaxation and for adventure.

An 11th Win for Portugal’s Southern Coast

Portugal’s southernmost region has now won Europe’s Leading Beach Destination 11 times, most recently at the 33rd annual World Travel Awards. The Algarve took the title five years in a row, from 2019 through 2023. This year’s win brings the title back after Madeira’s Porto Santo Island won in 2024 and Greece’s Costa Navarino won in 2025.

The awards began in 1993. Each year, they honor destinations and organizations for their tourism achievements.

3 Beaches Worth Planning Around

Praia da Marinha draws visitors with its striking rock formations and turquoise water. Meia Praia gives you an expansive sandy shoreline to spread out on.

If you’d rather find unspoiled beaches, the Costa Vicentina is the place to look.

What’s Waiting Away From the Water

Beyond the beaches, you can explore traditional fishing villages, historic towns, scenic hiking trails and protected natural areas. You can also dig into the Algarve’s distinctive culinary traditions or head inland to see the countryside.

“This recognition also reflects the dedication of the people and communities who help make the Algarve such a special place to visit,” said André Gomes, who leads the Algarve Tourism Bureau.

Gomes called the beaches some of the region’s greatest treasures. He also invited travelers to discover the rest of the Algarve, including its cultural heritage and food.

Why Summer Isn’t the Only Season

The tourism bureau pitches the Algarve as a destination for every season, pointing to the region’s mild climate. You can surf, kayak, cycle or play a round of golf here.

The bureau also says it promotes tourism that runs year-round and spreads more evenly across the region.

Plan an Algarve Trip After Summer

If the Algarve is on your list, try booking it outside the summer months. The tourism bureau also counts wellness and luxury among the region’s offerings, which gives you room to plan a slower trip beyond the beach. Pick a home base, then split your days between the coast and the countryside.
