Over a three-day July stay with my teenage daughter, I discovered how the lodge’s dining venues elevate the mountain experience, from exclusive club breakfasts to polished steakhouse dinners. Beyond the property, Kananaskis Country extends the story with a golf course clubhouse that serves lunch worth seeking out, as well as a historic ranch where barbecue and cowboy culture come together. In this corner of Alberta, you do not have to leave the mountains for a five-star meal.
The Black Diamond Club: Exclusive and elevated
Tucked into its own private building, the Black Diamond Club feels like a retreat within a retreat. Access is limited to guests staying in the club-level rooms, which makes the space feel calm and exclusive. We started one morning with the high-end buffet, where even the simplest items were presented with care. Fresh fruit, warm pastries and hot dishes came with the kind of polish I would expect in a city luxury hotel rather than a mountain lodge.
What stood out was not just the quality but the atmosphere. The lounge is bright and comfortable, with windows that frame the mountain views while you sip coffee or choose something sweet from the buffet. In the afternoons, we stopped in for après-hike bites, small plates that were restorative after time outdoors. Later in the evening, the club offered desserts and a quiet place to unwind with something indulgent before heading back to our room.
Evenings at the Cedar Room steakhouse
The Cedar Room is the lodge’s fine-dining anchor, and Canadian beef is the specialty at this mountain chophouse. My prime rib was a standout, rich and juicy with a depth of flavor that only comes from quality sourcing and careful preparation. The menu also offers variety, with starters such as baked Camembert cheese with cherries and pecans, or crab and avocado mille-feuille, alongside seafood and crisp salad entrees for those who prefer something lighter.
The dining room buzzed with energy the night we visited. A diverse wine list and service that was both professional and welcoming made the experience feel every bit like big-city dining, only set against a mountain backdrop.
Forte Restaurant: Comfort with a mountain twist
Forte strikes a balance between casual and refined. It is warm, inviting and perfect for families. Large windows brighten the dining room and frame the mountain views, and in nice weather, the outdoor patio becomes one of the best spots to sit and enjoy a meal.
Dinner here leans Italian, with wood-fired pizzas, fresh pastas and classics like chicken parmesan on the menu. You can also opt for the diverse buffet, which changes daily. We visited at night, and began with meatballs to share, which were savory and satisfying without being heavy. We also tried a couple of pasta dishes, including the braised short rib pappardelle.
Breakfast at Forte offers the same flexibility. Guests can choose from the buffet or order from the a la carte menu for a more personalized experience. Lunch is also served, making Forte a reliable choice throughout the day. With its Italian-inspired menu, versatile hours and a setting that ranges from cozy dining room to sunny patio, it is one of the lodge’s most approachable and enjoyable restaurants.
Blacktail Bar: Cocktails and mountain-style eats
No stay at the lodge feels complete without a stop at the Blacktail Bar. The space has an easy elegance, with dark wood, warm lighting and a lively but relaxed energy that makes it as appealing for a pre-dinner drink as it is for a nightcap.
The cocktail list is where the bar sets itself apart. Creative drinks arrive with polished presentation, some inspired by local ingredients and others by global events. A standout example is the G7 Global Cocktail Series, created as an homage to visiting world leaders. Each cocktail in the lineup pays tribute to one of the participating countries, blending flavors and spirits that reflect its culture.
One of my favorite cocktails was La Fille en Rose, served in a bathtub-shaped cup with a froth of bubbles. It was whimsical, a little unexpected and delicious enough to remind me that cocktails can be as inventive as cuisine.
Food at Blacktail Bar goes beyond bar snacks. The menu features starters, salads, sandwiches, bowls and classic pub fare, served at both lunch and dinner. It is designed to be as versatile as the space itself, whether guests want a quick bite after the spa or a full meal without the formality of the steakhouse.
Blacktail Bar is the kind of place you would expect to find in a downtown boutique hotel, only framed by an alpine backdrop. Whether paired with a casual lunch, enjoyed alongside a late-night cocktail or shared over appetizers on the patio after a day outdoors, it proves that even the most relaxed corner of the lodge maintains high dining standards.
Dining beyond the lodge
The Summit Restaurant at the Kananaskis Country Golf Course is known for having one of the best patios in the Rockies. With sweeping views of the greens framed by Mount Kidd, it is the kind of place where even a simple lunch feels special. After a morning hike, my teenage daughter and I settled at a patio table to soak in the scenery. Our lunch was perfect: the fish and chips were crisp and flaky, the beef dip sandwich hearty and satisfying.
Boundary Ranch offers a different kind of dining experience, rooted in cowboy heritage. The Ridge Ride ’n Steak Lunch pairs a guided horseback ride through surrounding trails with a classic Western barbecue meal. Smoke from the barrel-style grills drifts across the lively patio as plates of sizzling steak are served with rustic sides. Eating there felt like stepping into the history of Kananaskis, where food is more than fuel and every meal carries the spirit of the frontier.
