Summer’s barely over, but some Americans are already locking in holiday getaways. More than 17 million travelers are expected to fly during the holiday stretch, while bookings for winter cruises and cold-weather escapes are already filling up. With high fares and limited inventory driving urgency, trip planning is now a race to the places travelers dream of most.

This year’s travelers are rewriting the booking playbook, trading procrastination for precision. They’re securing the best of the season early, before cabins fill, rates climb and exclusivity slips out of reach.
Surge in early travel planning
Early bookings for holiday and winter vacations are already fueling growth across packaged trips and luxury stays. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen millions of travelers from Aug. 29 to Sept. 4, with the peak on Aug. 30 expected to see 2.86 million passengers pass through checkpoints.
The U.S. Travel Winter 2025 Forecast also projects that travel spending will keep climbing at steady rates, powered by consumer confidence and solid business investment. Major events drawing international visitors provide extra drive, setting the stage for record-breaking travel as the year closes.
Short-notice travel trends
Some travelers are thinking months ahead, but many are still drawn to short-notice trips that break up the calendar. That appetite for quick escapes is clear, with 41% planning trips of three nights or less over the summer months, compared with 37% last year. Longer journeys are also gaining ground, as 45% say their main trip will last a week or more.
International fares, by contrast, have climbed higher than domestic tickets, with round-trip prices rivaling midsummer peaks. Those steep costs are nudging more Americans toward closer-to-home escapes, where high prices cause them to find nearby trips that balance price and convenience.
Seasonal escapes worth booking early
Looking ahead to snow-dusted adventures or sun-soaked escapes, a lot of American travelers are locking in their dream winter trips while the rest of us are still in flip-flops.
