Sun-soaked Mediterranean boat trips dominate 2026 bookings as travelers choose crystal-clear open water over crowded beaches. Greek harbors, sun-bleached Italian ports and hidden Croatian bays lead the latest rankings, offering quick access to island-hopping routes across turquoise coastlines. The surge reveals something simple: travelers would rather wake up somewhere new every morning than spend a week looking at the same view.

The boat travel ranking uses data from more than 100 coastal and island destinations, including search volume, year-over-year growth, charter inquiries and social media activity. Overall, travelers favor multistop itineraries built around ports that offer quick access to nearby sailing routes.
Greek capital leads charters
Athens ranks first for boat vacations in 2026, scoring 74.50 out of 100, according to new global luxury yacht charter specialist research. The Greek capital led the final rankings and generated the highest number of Instagram tags among all destinations reviewed. Booking requests and search growth also contributed to its overall score, placing it ahead of competing seaside markets.
“Whether you’re hiring a small boat for a few hours or setting off on a longer charter, the places in our index have something for every kind of water lover,” said Mitja Mirtič, a charter industry executive. “What’s really interesting is seeing Athens climb to the top. That says a lot. It’s not just somewhere you fly into for a quick city break anymore. People are starting to see it as a proper coastal escape.”
Travelers continue to choose Athens for its mix of historic landmarks and direct access to open water. Visitors can explore the city and then depart by boat toward the Aegean islands. The balance of culture and sailing access positions Athens as a strong choice for 2026 itineraries built around time on the water.
Boaters favor Naples access
Naples ranks second for 2026 boat travel with a score of 58.82, just behind the top-ranked destination. The Italian port city drew significant attention across social media, with around 10 million Instagram posts mentioning the location. That volume of user content indicates sustained global interest among travelers planning coastal and island itineraries.
Naples serves as a launch point for several well-known Mediterranean routes. From its harbor, boaters can reach Capri, Positano and towns along the Amalfi Coast within a short sail, and its position along the Tyrrhenian Sea makes it a practical starting base for multistop itineraries.
Santorini draws global searches
The third spot in the 2026 boat travel rankings goes to Santorini, which earned a score of 55.05. The Greek island recorded 2.24 million Google searches between September 2024 and October 2025, the highest search total among all destinations reviewed in the index. Strong online interest helped secure its position near the top of the list.
Travelers recognize Santorini for its whitewashed buildings topped with blue domes set above the Aegean Sea. The island sits within the Cyclades group, a region known for sailing routes that connect multiple ports within short distances. Its volcanic caldera also creates dramatic coastal views from the water, which draws steady demand for private charters and day cruises.
Island favorites and new contenders
Mykonos and Capri also secured spots in the top five, posting index scores of 36.04 and 28.40, respectively. Capri recorded a 22% year-on-year increase in Google searches, the fastest growth rate among the top 10 destinations. Positano, Sorrento, Zadar, Sakarun Beach and Amalfi rounded out the list, reinforcing continued demand for Mediterranean sailing routes.
Sakarun Beach posted a 181% rise in Google searches compared with 2024, lifting it to ninth place despite a smaller overall digital footprint. “The big names like Santorini and Capri are still as popular as ever,” Mirtič said. “But we’re also seeing an interest in lesser-known spots. Sakarun Beach in Croatia is on the verge of losing its status as one of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets. It’s the kind of place where you can either discover by boat, away from the crowds, or grab a snorkel and enjoy a relaxing day around the shore,” he added.
Itineraries favor open water
Boat travel rankings indicate growing demand for destinations that pair direct water access with established tourism infrastructure. Interest spans well-known ports and rising coastal spots, with charter bookings and short-term rentals continuing to expand as travelers plan shorter, flexible trips. This shift brings boat travel firmly into the mainstream, making it a regular part of vacation planning rather than a once-in-a-while option.
