Embrace the cold

These winter destinations are perfect for those who love adventuring while bundled up. Here are some places you must visit if you like the snow.

Dog sledding in Alaska

Explore the beauty of Alaska by driving a sled pulled by a team of dogs. Guided tours will allow you to interact with and learn about Alaskan huskies and experience the art of dog mushing. With some tours, you can ride as a passenger and drive the tag sled, all while you enjoy the stunning Alaskan scenery. This snow-filled activity will show you that there’s more to Alaska than meets the eye — or the paws.

Traditional ryokans in Japan

Add Japanese ryokans to your list for a more intimate getaway that offers a unique experience of Japanese culture. Ryokans are traditional Japanese inns or guesthouses known for their tatami floors, futon beddings and sliding paper doors. They are often located in scenic areas or regions, like the Japanese Alps or famous onsen towns such as Noboribetsu Onsen, Shibu Onsen and Zao Onsen.

The winter snow-covered surroundings create a perfect atmosphere for relaxation, but the highlight of staying at a ryokan is the onsen experience. Onsens are natural hot springs that have been a fundamental part of Japanese culture for centuries. These are not only spaces to relax but also places where people can engage in personal reflection and connect with nature.

History and folklore in Transylvania, Romania

Why not visit Transylvania if you’re more of a history buff? This Romanian region, made famous in Western culture as the home of Count Dracula, is a beautiful and historically rich destination where you can go snowshoeing in the Carpathian Mountains, visit a local bear sanctuary and, of course, drop by the famous Bran Castle, the fictional home of Dracula.

Transylvania’s multi-ethnic heritage is reflected in its food, folk costumes and music. You can also experience local folklore and immerse yourself in the region’s centuries-old traditions. If these don’t satisfy your cravings for history, you can always explore its medieval castles and charming villages.

Escape the snowy weather

Traveling this winter season doesn’t mean that you need to be covered in layers of clothes. These warmer destinations will help you embrace other cultures without getting the shivers.

A journey through Rome

Escape the snow and enjoy Rome’s mild Mediterranean climate with fewer crowds in winter. The Eternal City allows you to join the festive celebrations of Christmas, New Year’s and Carnival, along with seasonal treats like mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and vin bule, without spending a fortune.

Famous attractions like the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Spanish Steps are more satisfying without the summer crowd. Winter also brings delicious seasonal dishes, like trapizzino and suppli, or go traditional with a pasta carbonara, perfect for warming up after sightseeing.

The peaceful beauty in Santorini, Greece

If you don’t mind a cool breeze, Santorini in Greece is your destination. Mediterranean cruises also often stop by Santorini, and with its peak tourist season ending in September, winter is an ideal time to visit for fewer crowds. Popular attractions like the sunset in Oia, hiking, winery tours and boat tours around the Caldera remain accessible, while many cafes and restaurants stay open throughout the year.

Don’t forget to maximize the off-season experience by adding Mykonos or Athens to your itinerary. And if you want secluded accommodation, book a room at Scorpios Beach, or rent a private villa for a nice view of the Aegean Sea.

Winter safari in Kangaroo Island, Australia

Australia’s Kangaroo Island is an ideal winter getaway for nature lovers. It offers rich biodiversity and conservation areas where you can see native wildlife like kangaroos, koalas and echidnas. Often called Australia’s Galapagos, this island has a mild climate, creating a peaceful environment to explore.

Visiting Kangaroo Island from December to February is also perfect for sampling their local produce, fresh seafood like Southern rock lobster and delicacies like lavender ice cream and locally crafted gin. So, don’t forget to pack your camera for all the food and wildlife selfies.

Travel off the beaten path this winter

While the appeal of traveling to major cities and popular destinations can be tempting this winter, choosing a location off the beaten path allows you to enjoy winter travel away from the bustling crowds and experience unique activities that you’ll remember long after the season has passed.
